About the PFT

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) measures cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and core stability through three events: Plank, Upper Body (Pull-ups or Push-ups), and a 3-Mile Run or 5000m Row. A perfect score is 300 points (100 per event).

Understanding USMC Fitness Test Scoring

Everything you need to know about PFT and CFT requirements

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The Marine Corps PFT measures a Marine's physical conditioning through three key events:

  • Pull-ups or Push-ups: Tests upper body strength and endurance (max 100 points)
  • Plank Hold: Measures core strength and stability (max 100 points)
  • 3-Mile Run: Assesses cardiovascular endurance (max 100 points)

Marines must score at least 135 total points with a minimum of 40 points per event to pass. A first-class score requires 225+ points.

Combat Fitness Test (CFT)

The CFT evaluates combat readiness through functional fitness events:

  • Movement to Contact: 880-yard sprint simulating rapid deployment (max 100 points)
  • Ammunition Lift: 30-pound ammo can overhead lifts for 2 minutes (max 100 points)
  • Maneuver Under Fire: 300-yard course with combat tasks (max 100 points)

Like the PFT, the CFT requires 135 minimum points to pass, with 225+ for first-class.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Marine Corps PFT scored?

The Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test (PFT) consists of three events: pull-ups or push-ups, plank hold, and a 3-mile run. Each event is worth up to 100 points, for a maximum total score of 300 points. Scoring is based on age, gender, and performance in each event according to official USMC standards.

What is a passing PFT score for Marines?

A minimum score of 135 points is required to pass the PFT, with at least 40 points in each event. First-class PFT scores require 225 points or higher, with minimum requirements in each individual event.

What events are in the Marine Corps CFT?

The Combat Fitness Test (CFT) includes three events: Movement to Contact (880-yard sprint), Ammunition Lift (30-pound lift for 2 minutes), and Maneuver Under Fire (300-yard course with combat-related tasks). Each event is scored up to 100 points for a maximum of 300 points.

How often do Marines take the PFT and CFT?

Marines are required to complete both the PFT and CFT semi-annually. The PFT is typically conducted every six months, and the CFT is also administered twice per year, with specific timing determined by unit commanders.

Can I use push-ups instead of pull-ups on the PFT?

Yes, Marines can choose to perform push-ups instead of pull-ups for the upper body event. However, pull-ups generally yield higher scores for the same level of effort, as the scoring standards favor pull-ups.
